Man of the Deep is based on the medieval legend of the Wild Man of Orford, sometimes known as the Orford Merman who was caught in the nets of local fishermen. This twelfth century tale is set against the dramatic backcloth of Orford Castle on the Suffolk Coast and is a good to historical fiction for children. The tale of the Wild Man of Orford was recorded by Ralph of Coggeshall writing in the “Chronicon Anglicanum” in 1200 but referring to a time about forty years earlier. Ralph of Coggeshall became Abbot Ralph in 1207 and the document was kept by the Cistercian monks at Coggeshall Abbey in Essex.
Jenny Webb has taken Abbot Ralph’s account as the basis of her story and has also included historical figures of the time such as Bartholomew de Glanville, the constable of the castle and his chaplain, Wimar. She has also created the characters of the fishermen who caught the merman in their nets. Seeing the events through their eyes, we are given a moral dimension to the story as it unfolds.
