"The Wife" is the middle installment in this epic trilogy, but it holds its own as a standalone novel. It continues the life story of the eponymous heroine, Kristin Lavransdatter, who is torn between her fierce desires and the responsibilities imposed on her by society.

The Unfolding of Kristin's Journey: Love, Betrayal, and Redemption

In "The Wife," Undset presents readers with a deeply intricate and psychological journey through Kristin's life. Set against the backdrop of a rigidly patriarchal society, Kristin struggles to reconcile her passion for love and her duty as a wife and mother. Her desires clash with societal expectations, leading her to tread a perilous path.

Undset's vivid and emotive prose allows readers to intimately connect with Kristin's emotions and experiences. From her forbidden love affair with Erlend Nikulaussøn and her battle between her earthly desires and religious devotion, to the consequences of her choices and the burdens she carries, Kristin's journey is a captivating tapestry of human frailty and resilience.

Exploring Medieval Norway: An Authentic and Evocative Setting

Undset's meticulous attention to historical detail transports readers to a bygone era, vividly immersing them in medieval Norway. From the bustling streets of Oslo to the serene beauty of the countryside, every setting comes alive through Undset's descriptive prowess.

Through her words, readers can envision the grand cathedrals, the magnificent landscapes, and the intricate tapestries of medieval life. Undset's portrayal of the societal norms, religious fervor, and the struggle for power adds depth and authenticity to the narrative, making it irresistibly engrossing.

The Wife as a Timeless Exploration of Complex Relationships

Undset masterfully explores the complexities of relationships in "The Wife." Through Kristin's interactions with her husband, Erlend, her father, Lavrans, and her children, Undset offers a profound examination of love, betrayal, and the consequences of one's actions.

The themes of fidelity, forgiveness, and sacrifice resonate throughout the novel, prompting readers to reflect on their own lives and relationships. Undset's nuanced character development ensures that each relationship feels authentic, allowing readers to empathize with the characters and their struggles.

The Wife: A Thought-Provoking Exploration of Gender Expectations

Undset's portrayal of gender expectations in medieval society serves as a crucial lens through which readers can evaluate modern notions of gender roles. Kristin's battle against societal norms highlights the limitations imposed upon women during that era.

The Wife challenges readers to question the roles society assigns to individuals based on their gender. It prompts us to reflect on our own expectations and the ways in which we can break free from societal constraints.

The Legacy of Sigrid Undset and The Wife

Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter Trilogy stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and its ability to transcend time, culture, and language. From its inception, "The Wife" has captivated readers across the globe, earning acclaim for its honest portrayal of human emotions and its exploration of timeless themes.

Undset's Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928 further solidified her place among the literary greats, while cementing the Trilogy's reputation as a true literary treasure. Her commitment to historical accuracy and her deeply introspective storytelling make "The Wife" a must-read for any lover of literature and historical fiction.

A Penguin Classic

Kristin Lavransdatter interweaves political, social, and religious history with the daily aspects of family life to create a colorful, richly detailed tapestry of Norway during the fourteenth-century. The trilogy, however, is more than a journey into the past. Undset's own life—her familiarity with Norse sagas and folklore and with a wide range of medieval literature, her experiences as a daughter, wife, and mother, and her deep religious faith—profoundly influenced her writing. Her grasp of the connections between past and present and of human nature itself, combined with the extraordinary quality of her writing, sets her works far above the genre of "historical novels." This new translation by Tina Nunnally—the first English version since Charles Archer's translation in the 1920s—captures Undset's strengths as a stylist. Nunnally, an award-winning translator, retains the natural dialog and lyrical flow of the original Norwegian, with its echoes of Old Norse legends, while deftly avoiding the stilted language and false archaisms of Archer's translation. In addition, she restores key passages left out of that edition.

Undset's ability to present a meticulously accurate historical portrait without sacrificing the poetry and narrative drive of masterful storytelling was particularly significant in her homeland. Granted independence in 1905 after five hundred years of foreign domination, Norway was eager to reclaim its national history and culture. Kristin Lavransdatter became a touchstone for Undset's contemporaries, and continues to be widely read by Norwegians today. In the more than 75 years since it was first published, it has also become a favorite throughout the world.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by s and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
